Troon Country Club holds a unique place in golf history as the first golf course design by Tom Weiskopf, created in collaboration with architect Jay Morrish. Opened in 1986, the course is not only a reflection of Weiskopf's deep knowledge of the game but also a tribute to his illustrious playing career and the Major Championship pedigree of Royal Troon, where he captured the 1973 Open Championship.
From its earliest days, Troon Country Club has stood as a true championship test, drawing national recognition for its strategic design, pristine desert setting, and ability to challenge players of every caliber. Over the decades, the course has become a stage for some of the most prestigious events in amateur and professional golf.
The Club has proudly hosted three USGA National Championships:
- 1990 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship
- 2023 U.S. Senior Women's Amateur Championship
- 2025 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship
From 1987 - 1993, the Club was home to the celebrated Ping Pro-Scratch Invitational, which brought together touring professionals and elite amateurs. Major champions such as Mark Brooks, Steve Jones, Phil Mickelson, Tom Weiskopf, and Fuzzy Zoeller all walked the fairways of Troon Country Club during this era, further cementing its legacy as a proving ground for greatness.
Today, Troon Country Club remains a testament to Tom Weiskopf's vision, a living tribute to the traditions of the game, and one of the Southwest's most respected championship venues. Its history continues to unfold, as Members and new generations of golfers are challenged and inspired by the course's timeless design.
